🌟 BREED SPOTLIGHT: Tamaskan 🌟 Tamaskan dogs are a breed of dog from Finland that have been selectively bred to resemble a wolf. Similar in size to its cousin the German Shepherd, the Tamaskan has a thick coat and straight, bushy tail. It comes in three main colours of red-gray, wolf-gray and black-gray. Eyes are yellow through amber and brown, although light eyes are very rare. The Tamaskan is a good family dog, being gentle with children and accepting of other dogs. His high intelligence makes him an excellent working dog and the Tamaskan has been known to exceed in agility and obedience as well as sled racing. This pack dog prefers not to be left alone for long periods of time. It is better suited to other human or canine company. Chocolate is toxic because it contains a chemical called theobromine, as well as caffeine. Theobromine is the predominant toxin in chocolate and is very similar to caffeine. Dogs and cats cannot metabolise theobromine and caffeine as well as people can, and this makes them more sensitive to the chemicals’ effects. Xylitol 🍬 Xylitol is a sweetener that is most commonly found in food products but can be found in other consumer goods such as medications, sunscreen, makeup and toothpaste. We all enjoy the explosion of colour at this time of the year, however with blossoms come bees, and subsequently the risk of your four-legged friend being stung. 🌸🌼 Walking your dog in the cooler hours when bees are less active will help to reduce the risks, however what should you do if your dog is stung by a bee? 🐾 Keep our number in your phone and call ahead to let us know you are on the way. You should also keep your local after hours emergency vet number handy. 🐾 If your dog has a known anaphylactic reaction to a bee sting or a pattern of escalating reaction to bee stings then we recommend keeping an Epi-pen on hand. This allergic reaction is known as flea allergy dermatitis, or FAD. Grass Seeds 🌾 Grass seeds are a common cause of admissions to hospital in Springtime. They fall off long grass and embed themselves in a dog’s paws, ears, armpits, tail, or skin, sometimes causing painful wounds and infections. It's important to remove them as quickly as possible as they can embed themselves under the skin and migrate through your pet's body. 🤕 Signs that your dog may have picked up a grass seed include: 🐾 head shaking 🐾 paw licking 🐾 swelling 🐾 redness 🐾 oozing or 🐾 sneezing if the grass seed has lodged in the nose. If the grass seed is close to the surface of the skin our vets may be able to remove it with a special pair of tweezers, however if it has become embedded deeply beneath the skin or lodged in eyes, ears or mouth, surgical removal may be required. The best thing to do is keep your dog away from long grass in the warmer months and check their fur and paws thoroughly after a walk. Hot Spots 🔥 In Springtime we usually see a resurgence of hot spots on dogs caused by seasonal allergies. 🌸 🔴 Canine hot spots are lesions that occur when dogs scratch, gnaw and/or lick at an itchy area on their bodies. These sores are red, wet, and often warm to the touch (hence the name "hot spots"). Hot spots often become infected, and the resulting discomfort will cause the dog to do further damage to the area with continued scratching, gnawing, and/or licking. (We refer to this condition as acute pyoderma, acute moist pyotraumatic dermatitis (AMPD), or moist/wet eczema.) 🔴 Treatment usually involves clipping the affected area, irrigating the wound to clear out as much dirt and bacteria as we can, and applying a topical ointment to treat the bacterial infection. Patients also go home with an elizabethan collar to stop them licking the wound. After a thorough examination with Dr. Lauren, we discovered a long piece of grass lodged in his eyelid, which was causing an ulcer. Thanks to prompt treatment and medication, Cricket was sent home with instructions to return for a check-up in 24 hours. 💥 The Importance of Dental X-rays 💥 Our pets simply cannot tell us when their teeth are sore or if they are in any pain. Dental x-rays in animals are similar to those taken in humans. An x-ray machine using small amounts of radiation is used to see the inside of your pet's teeth and those areas below the gum line that are hidden from view. 🦷🩻 Unlike humans, our pets need to be under general anaesthesia. Without anaesthesia, the x-ray sensor cannot be accurately placed. They are also required to be still during the oral assessment, treatment and prevention procedures. Our pets may need an oral examination under anaesthesia when they are displaying these signs: 🦷 Discoloured or fractured teeth 🦷 Swollen and inflamed gums 🦷 Oral growths 🦷 Tartar 🦷 Bad breath Even without any of these signs, pets should have their mouths x-rayed at least once every year. People routinely have dental x-rays at least every other year.
